About the Author: Andy Forbes

My path to understanding the human mind and spirit has been both personal and deeply educational. Having struggled with anxiety for much of my adult life, a turning point came when I discovered mindfulness meditation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Stoic philosophy. These practices equipped me with a grounded, resilient approach to navigating life’s challenges, big and small.

For nearly a decade, I’ve immersed myself in psychology and philosophy, driven by a passion for self-guided study. This journey has profoundly shaped my perspective, fuelling the essence of my writing here on this site.

In 2020, I trained as a crisis response volunteer with the Crisis Textline, dedicating my time to supporting others in moments of need. This experience not only strengthened my empathy and listening skills but also gave me hands-on insight into mental health challenges and the resilience needed to overcome them.

Since then, I’ve committed myself to helping others find the same clarity and centeredness. My mission is to support others in building a balanced, fulfilling life rooted in inner strength and emotional awareness. Through deliberate effort and a willingness to grow, I believe anyone can reclaim control over their emotional state and avoid drifting through life, passively shaped by its pressures.

Finding Balance Through Stoicism and Philosophy

Stoicism—and philosophy in general—can be challenging to fully embrace. Some might feel that striving for a virtuous life is an unattainable ideal, so why even try? Others may assume that living by Stoic principles would make someone cold and emotionless. This, however, misses the essence of what Stoicism offers.

At the heart of the Of Mind And Body philosophy—and my own—is the belief that balance is essential. Moving too far in any one direction can lead to extremes, with undesirable behaviours and outcomes following close behind. Without careful and mindful examination, life tends to pull us along with external forces—like social media, societal pressures, and prevailing norms—that often push us toward excess, reactivity, self-pity, and judgement.

Purposeful, considered application of philosophy acts as a counterweight to external influences, establishing an inner tension between these forces and our own guiding principles. This balance helps us reach a mindful, steady existence where we remain true to ourselves—not merely reacting to the world around us, but consciously choosing how to live within it.
