How many times have you started the day with the best intentions and felt great about where your weight loss journey might take you?
How many times have you given in to temptation and felt terrible almost immediately after you’ve stopped eating?
What is this inner voice that switches from being super positive to being the voice of temptation in a matter of seconds?
The thing is you probably know fine well that if you eat the thing in front of you that you will regret it almost the very second you have swallowed the last bite.
So why do it?
There is a battle going on inside of our heads.
The sensible, observant part of our brain tells us “We probably shouldn’t eat that, its not good for us.”
And then we have the reactionary part of our brain telling us “We need calories and we need them now!”
Well, which one do you think shouts louder? You guessed it! Without warning this part of our brain takes over and demands your full attention. This voice only stays with us until we’ve finished eating and then disappears into the ether leaving us to deal with the aftermath, but trust me when I say it will be back when temptation rears it’s ugly head again.
It’s incredibly easy to take the path of least resistance. To give in and take a course of action that gives instant gratification, even though it’s only temporary and almost certainly leads to feelings of guilt and disappointment.
It’s time to break the cycle.
Catch yourself before you make the decision and mentally project yourself into the future. Ignore those cravings and remember that in about 5 minutes you’ll feel like crap if you make the wrong choice. Bring those feelings of guilt forward a few minutes and experience them now because that is exactly how you will feel if you eat that shit.
If you can catch yourself, try it. Give yourself an anchor or trigger that brings you back into the present and be aware of the battle going on inside your mind. Twang an elastic band off your wrist, nip yourself, slap yourself in the face! (probably not the best thing to do in public), anything to bring your attention back to the present and enable yourself to make the right choice.
At the same time give yourself a pat on the back and feel good about yourself because you’re about to make the right decision and choose the healthy option.
You may not enjoy it as much but so what? Food is NOT entertainment!
Which decision will take you closer to your goal? I can guarantee you it’s the healthy option every time.
Do you want 5 minutes of gratification only to prolong the constant negative feeling you get from being overweight?
NO!
It’s not easy and but it’s worked for me. I hope this helps!
